YAK...

Young Adult Kolumn
By Nicole Marcuccilli Mills, Young Adult Librarian

Greetings high school students and welcome to YAK! My name is Nicole Marcuccilli Mills, and I am the young adult librarian at the Glenview Public Library. My goal is to help you find information that you need, whether it be for a school assignment or something that just nips at your curiosity bone. I want to plan programs that fit your needs, so I need to know what you think. Tell me what you would like to see as far as books and other library materials, trips to not-so-far-off lands, exciting programs, and discussion groups. Remember, your vote counts so don't be shy! SPEAK UP!

VOLUNTEENS

Our Young Adult Advisory Kommittee (YAAK) has been successfully replaced with a new program called VolunTeens. To date, the library has over 25 hardworking VolunTeens who come in on a regular basis and perform duties as assigned by various departments. This gets teens involved with the library community and in helping librarians out with various projects. This year-round program is available for all teens ages 13 and up who would like to donate their time and talents and have an opportunity to earn service points. It is a wonderful way for teens to see how the library operates on a day-to-day basis. Hours are tracked each time a teen comes to the library and helps out with a special project. Certificates of Achievement with hours tallied are sent to VolunTeens at the end of each month and signed by Nicole M. Mills as well as the Project Supervisor. Applications and detailed flyers are available at the Reader Services Desk. Orientation sessions are on an as-needed basis and cover log in procedures as well as expectations of being a VolunTeen. Teachers and librarians who would like application forms for your high school or know of perspective students who may benefit from this involvement or for further questions, please contact Nicole M. Mills, Young Adult Librarian, at 847-729-7500 x151 or through e-mail.

This is a great way to become familiar with the library’s day-to-day operations and become involved in your community.
