Welcome, Teachers
The Youth Services Department is pleased to extend its services to the school librarians and teachers of Glenview. The Teachers Guide
was created to keep you informed of all the resources the library has to offer.
Glenview Schools' Assignment Alert Form
The Glenview Public Library would like to help students and teachers with their assignment needs. Teachers can use this to alert library staff about upcoming assignments and projects.
School Loans
All Glenview schools are eligible for a School Library Card.
Two school personnel are authorized to use the card, often
the principal and the librarian, or the librarian and the
librarian’s assistant. All requests must be made through
these authorized personnel.
Benefits of acquiring a school library card:
- Five-week check out time for books
- Sturdy bags to hold large book loans
- Librarian-selected materials in the subject area or theme you specify
Contact your school librarian to request materials.
Textbook Collection
We currently house textbooks from OLPH, Attea, and
Springman for use in the Library. These non-circulating
books are a great resource for students and patrons.
If your school is interested in donating current textbooks,
please contact the School Services Coordinator.

the following formats for school visits:

Library Survival Island
This exciting program introduces students to resources in
the Youth Services Department in a fun and interactive format.

Youth Services Department and we can arrange a visit to meet
your specifications.
Programs
Let us come to you! The Youth Services Department offers library programs to suit a variety of needs:
Storytime
We offer one traveling story time program during the school
year for each class. This entertaining program may feature any
or all of the following: puppets, props, music, and of course,
great books. Grades K-2 • time varies
Book Talks
During the school year, a librarian from Youth Services is
available to come to your school and book talk some of our
favorite books or books in a theme you specify. Grades 3-8 • time varies
To schedule a book talk or story time, contact the
School Services Coordinator.
Reading Incentive Programs
Battle of the Books
The Glenview Library annually
sponsors a tournament in January and February for fourth and fifth
graders to test their knowledge of books. Teams of four read
from a selected list and try to identify books from a series of
questions. All participants receive a certificate and are invited
to a party at the end of the season. Informational school visits
begin in October and registration runs through November.
Ask your school librarian for more information.
Books and Badges
Students can read books at home and earn badges to sew
on their backpacks, jackets, library bag or caps. This program
begins the week following Labor Day, and ends the Saturday
before Memorial Day. The Books & Badges program is
open to children ages 2 through grade 8.
Summer Reading Program
Around 2,000 children participate every year in the
Glenview Public Library’s Summer Reading Program for
children birth to grade 8. Students report on books they have
read to take a turn at the game and a chance to win a prize.
School assemblies start in May and the program runs from
June to August. The School Services Coordinator will contact
your school to schedule a visit.
Book Buddies Summer Literacy Program
The Book Buddies Summer Reading Program is designed to
help new readers retain their reading skills during summer
vacation, and show them that books and reading are fun.
Volunteers in grades 7 and up are matched with young
readers in grades 1-3. Readers and volunteers meet once
a week during the summer for one hour. During the session,
they read aloud together, talk about the stories, and share
an activity.
Volunteers Needed!
Students entering eighth grade and up are encouraged to
participate in the summer reading program as STAR (Summer
Time Assisting Readers) Volunteers. STAR volunteers attend
a one-hour training session and are asked to complete a
minimum of eight hours of service in the Library during the
summer. Duties include listening to book reports and helping
with the game.
Students entering seventh grade and up are encouraged to
apply to become a Book Buddies volunteer. Students will be
matched with a young reader who they will meet with once a
week throughout the program.
Potential volunteers can register starting in April at the
Youth Services Desk or by phone at 847-729-7500.
For Teachers
Fall Preschool Teacher Workshop • K-2
Preschool teachers and aides living or working in Glenview
are invited each fall to a free workshop. Contact the Youth
Services Department for a description of this year’s workshop.
Spring Circle Time Swap for Preschool • K-2
A great opportunity to discover new material for use in your
classroom. Hear what your colleagues are doing and see how
they do it. Bring your best and most successful circle time
favorites to share-songs, dances, rhymes, finger plays, books,
stories, or props. Photocopies will be made for sharing items
or patterns. Go home with a folder filled with fresh ideas.
Online Databases
With a Glenview Public Library card, your students have
access to more than 15 databases designed just for kids.
Book Discussion Sets
The Library currently has Group Discussion Sets (10
paperback copies) of over 30 popular titles. Schools may
check out entire sets for five weeks on a school library card.
Preschool Kits
For preschool and grades K-2, the Library offers 40
themed kits for loan. Each kit contains 4-6 books, a DVD,
and a puppet or teaching prop related to the theme. Kits
circulate to schools for one week.
