A Cheeky Guide to Getting Fit in the New Year                             By Nancy Ashbrook

It is a New Year’s resolution for many of us – to exercise, eat healthy food, and lose some weight. And your Glenview Public Library can help! Here are a few extreme ideas to try in the New Year:

1.       Park in the Library’s parking lot across the street. Avoiding traffic to get to the front door keeps you nimble and on your feet!

2.       Return your books, videos, DVDs, and more inside the lobby alternating return slots to get your heart pumping and eyes moving!

3.       Walk quickly to the back stairway, sprinting up to the Mezzanine level to check the online catalog for all items related to exercise, fitness, and nutrition.

4.       Go to the 613’s and 641’s. Reach for books and DVDs on the top shelf and lower shelves only, stretching on your tippy toes and bending at your waist.

5.       Go carefully down the stairway to the lower level of the Library to pick up some books and music on CD and tape to energize your “walk off pounds” workouts!

joggerFor a more realistic approach to reducing in the New Year, check out the Glenview Public Library materials with “the smartest card in your wallet” – the Glenview Public Library card.

Lifestyle changes in what and how we eat, exercising for fun or to accommodate specific challenges, tips and strategies to motivate us – books, DVD’s, CD’s, audiotapes and more can help you stay focused on your goals. Did You Know? Magazines Available @ GPL
by Iva Freeman

 Poetry MagazinePoetry

Poetry, founded by Harriet Monroe in 1912, and published by the Poetry Foundation in Chicago, is the oldest independent magazine devoted to verse.  The size of a trade paperback, and published eleven times per year, it continues to serve its mission, "to print the best poetry written today, in whatever style, genre, or approach". A typical issue will contain poetry by known and new poets, poetry in translation, themed poetry, letters to the editor and essays. The first to publish William Carlos Williams and Carl Sandburg, the work of  contemporary poets such as Li-Young Lee,  Joy Harjo, Marie Ponsot, Sharon Olds, and Charles Bukowski provide a taste of the richness inside each issue.  Each issue of Poetry magazine will provide a way to discover a new favorite poet.
