  • Book Junkies Take Note
    .
If you haven't browsed a copy of Book magazine, you don't know what you're missing. Book magazine is to book lovers what People magazine is to celebrity watchers: it's packed with the latest book-related news and information, including author interviews and biographies, the stories behind the bestsellers, articles for book discussion groups, and much more, not to mention numerous book reviews of varying length and depth.

In the current issue of Book, for example, you'll find an article about what some bestselling authors of yesteryear are doing today, a story about the filming of Laura Hillenbrand's Seabiscuit, and a "fictional essay" by Stephen King. Along the way, you can read a review written by Anita Shreve and find out about books in progress.

Book magazine is located in the Periodicals room in the basement. It is published every other month. Conveniently, it is indexed in Infotrac, an online database the library subscribes to, so if you're looking for articles in past issues of Book you can locate them by searching Infotrac. Find out more about Book on their website http://www.bookmagazine.com.

    Book Discussion Group Chooses Titles
    .
The Monday Evening Book Discussion Group, lead by librarians Mary Van Dyke and Cynthia Miller, has chosen their selections for the coming year. The September selection is Sue Monk Kidd's The Secret Life of Bees. Kidd's novel is a coming-of-age story set in South Carolina in the 1960s. When Lily Owen's beloved nanny, Rosaleen, is forced to leave town, Lily joins her in a search for an explanation of her own past.

    Liberals vs. Conservatives
    Man and Woman Talking
The battle for the hearts and minds of America's voters continues to rage on the bookshelves, with a plethora of titles being published that push a political agenda. The conservative cover girl is Ann Coulter, whose most recent offering is Treason: Liberal Treachery from the Cold War to the War on Terrorism in which she accuses the left of being wrong on every foreign policy issue from the fight against Communism to America's war on terrorism.

In the opposite corner, representing the liberals, is Al Franken. Franken's latest book, Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right which hasn't even been published yet, has already come under fire from the "fair and balanced" Fox News Network for its use of the term "fair and balanced," which Fox says it has trademarked.

The debate over the amount of fairness and balance in the media is also being played out between the covers of books, with Eric Alterman's What Liberal Media? The Truth About Bias and the News confronting Bernard Goldberg's Bias : A CBS Insider Exposes How the Media Distort the News.

In the interest of full disclosure, those who like to read all sides of the political spectrum many want to have a look at these titles too:

Let Freedom Ring: Winning the War of Liberty over Liberalism by Sean Hannity

The Savage Nation: Saving America from the Liberal Assault on Our Borders, Language and Culture by Michael Savage

The O'Reilly Factor: The Good, the Bad, and the Completely Ridiculous in American Life by Bill O'Reilly

Big Lies: The Right-Wing Propaganda Machine and How It Distorts the Truth by Joe Conason

Bushwhacked: Life in George W. Bush's America by Molly Ivins

Pigs at the Trough: How Corporate Greed and Political Corruption Are Undermining America by Arianna Huffington

Note: The inclusion of a book by a candidate for political office by no means implies an endorsement of that candidate.
