Preschool Services

Material Selection:
Librarians in the Youth Services Department are ready to assist you with your Library needs. We will be happy to pull books and set them aside for you and your students. Simply phone 2-3 days in advance and we will select books, tapes/CDs or videos pertinent to a theme or unit you may be exploring with your children. We are always happy to gather a selection of “good read-alouds” or “funny books”—no special theme necessary!

4-Week Teacher Loans on Personal Cards:
As always, teachers, directors and childcare providers may check out books on their personal library cards for a special “4-week Teacher Loan.” Personal loans must be checked-out at the Circulation Desk. See list below regarding loan periods for other materials.

Preschool Kits

Preschool Kits:
Librarians have assembled 40 themed kits for easy use in your classroom. Kits include 4-6 books, a video or filmstrip and a puppet or teaching prop all related to a theme. We have kits for learning about seasons, holidays and other special topics such as emotions, friends, self-concept, starting school, apples, oceans, hibernation, dinosaurs, farms, community helpers, nutrition & hygiene and bugs.

Storytime Visits:
Preschools in Glenview are entitled to one storytime visit from a Librarian per school year. A librarian may travel to your school, or you may bring classes to the library for a special storytime. Visits to schools typically start in January. Visits to the Library typically take place during May. Call to reserve a date for a special storytime for your students which includes puppets, music and props.

Annual Preschool & Child Care Fair:
This annual open house for parents takes place in mid-January. Nearly 30 facilities participate annually, setting up table-top displays and handing out information to parents seeking these services. Last year more than 70 parents attended the open house to collect registration information and talk to representatives about their programs.

Annual Preschool Teacher Workshop:
Each November the Youth Services Department hosts an informative evening workshop for preschool and early elementary teachers featuring practical tips and tricks presented by a guest speaker. Past workshops have focused on storytelling technique, combining storytelling with music, and using music in the classroom.
