CENTER FOR LIFELONG LEARNING
GOAL #1: The library provides access to a broad spectrum of materials and resources to meet the needs of users of all ages.
A.) To expand services and reach out to diverse groups within the library’s service area and to promote library services to the unserved and the underserved.
1.1) Assess current foreign language materials, and seek to augment existing print and audio-visual materials with new formats, displays and programs. (AS – 2005/06)
1.2) Investigate partnering opportunities with other local cultural agencies. (AS – 2005)
1.3) Investigate the feasibility of a library-sponsored book discussion for the Korean population. (AS – 2004/05)
1.4) Foster interdepartmental cooperation to increase diversity and cultural awareness at each of the library’s public service desks. (AS, YS, CIRC – 2004/05)
1.5) Seek financial support from local businesses and not-for-profit agencies to supplement costs of Adult Services programming such as its “One Book, One Glenview” initiative. (AS – 2004/05)
B.) To create a permanent niche in the Reference Area for a Genealogy/Local History Collection, which includes a dedicated technology workstation.
2.1) Offer at least one genealogy program annually, in addition to genealogy workshops and training. (AS – 2004/05)
2.2) Continue to develop the existing genealogy collection and the Lundburg reference collection by purchasing suitable materials in print, electronic and other formats.
2.3) Create and maintain appropriate flyers, pathfinders, displays and other ephemera to promote services in the area of genealogy. (AS – 2004/07)
2.4) Develop local reference resources unique to the Glenview community, to include an online index of the local newspaper, with an index to Glenview obituaries currently on file in print format. (AS – 2005)
2.5) Purchase appropriate equipment and learn techniques to digitize local Glenview files. (AS – 2004/05)
C.) To develop partnerships between the local business community and the library.
3.1) Explore opportunities for networking and establishing community partnerships with businesses and other community organizations. (AS/PI – 2004 & On-going)
3.2) Create a Powerpoint presentation describing business-related resources available at the Glenview Public Library, which can be taken to community groups and organizations. (AS – 2005)
3.3) Develop flyers, bibliographies, displays and other marketing instruments to promote library services relating to business, careers and finance. (AS – 2004/07)
3.4) Expand the Glenview Public Library’s involvement with NorthStarNet to offer an exchange forum for local community information for patrons. (AS/TS – 2005)
3.5) Offer at least four business-related programs annually, including such topics as Internet Finance and Internet Databases. (AS – 2004/07)
3.6) Create webpages specific to the library’s Business Reference Information. (AS – 2004/05)
3.7) Explore partnerships with the Kohl Museum and the Park District to enhance programs for the young library user. (YS – 2005/06)
D.) To promote consumer health education in the community.
4.1) Offer health-related programs to include “hands-on” Internet classes on accessing and evaluating consumer health information. (AS – 2004)
4.2) Participate in at least one community health fair or similar activity annually. (AS – 2004/07)
4.3) Sponsor a bi-annual informational meeting for the area congregational nurses, the Village Senior Services coordinator and other area agency personnel who deal with community health. (AS – 2004/07)
4.4) Develop relationships with local agencies that provide health-related services for the purpose of fostering both patron and staff education. (AS – 2005)
4.5) Create a display area for consumer health information. (AS – 2005)
4.6) Revisit the design of the Consumer Health area with an eye to creating a space for comfortable reading chairs in the alcove to promote readership of consumer health periodicals. (AS – 2005)
4.7) Maintain and strengthen the existing CHIPS collections in a variety of formats. (AS – 2004/07)
4.8) Create web pages specific to Consumer Health resources at the library. (AS – 2005)
E.) To heighten library awareness within the community.
5.1) Analyze demographics to determine the potential placement of off-site resources such as library kiosks, book drops, etc. in strategic locales throughout the community. (AS – 2005/07)
5.2) Send weekly Calendar of Events to the Glenview Announcements, the Glenview Journal and other local publications, in print and electronic formats. (PI – 2004 and on-going)
5.3) Submit a monthly column on various book genres to the Glenview Announcements exclusively, to market diverse library collections. (PI – 2004 and on-going)
5.4) Plan informational and educational programs with local businesses, to include advertising in their facilities and to have appropriate materials at such programs for check-out. (PI – 2005)
5.5) Prepare an Annual Report for distribution to all Glenview businesses and residences. (PI – 2005)
5.6) Continue to produce a quarterly Newsletter for Glenview residents, with an eye to more frequent publication, i.e., five or six issues annually. (PI – 2004 & On-going)
5.7) Plan new programs targeting an audience that may not be using the library, to include: the Multi-Cultural Fair in October, 2004; ethnic fairs and concerts; New Resident Fair at Park Center, October, 2004. (AS/PI – 2004 and On-going)
5.8) Provide library card registration at various meetings and public venues outside the library. (AS/CIRC/YS – 2004 & On-going)
5.9) Expand National Library Week activities to include a variety of programs for all ages. (ALL – On-going)
5.10) Promote national Library Card Sign-Up Month each September, with endorsements from local businesses and organizations. (AS/CIRC/YS – 2004 & On-going)
5.11) Investigate the cost and feasibility of installing of-site library resources such as library kiosks, book returns, etc., in strategic locales throughout the community.
F.) To evaluate the effectiveness of current selection procedures in the Youth Services Department and to increase responsiveness to the needs of young patrons.
6.1) Monitor spending in accordance with base fund reports on a monthly basis, garnering feedback from all selectors (YS 2004 and on-going)
6.2) Revise and update Youth Services Collection Development Policy, assigning responsibility for various portions to appropriate staff. (YS – June, 2005)
G.) To further develop online marketing approaches to target audiences for library events, including such things as classes, programs and library expansion plans.
7.1) Evaluate options and establish a listserv, to be maintained internally or hosted by an outside provider. (ALL – 2007)
H.) To respond more effectively to patron needs by heightening the accessibility and availability of the library’s collections.
8.1) Provide patrons with a self-service reserve shelf. (CIRC – 2005)
8.2) Add additional “user friendly” subject headings, variant titles, complete cataloging, series entries, etc., to simplify access to authors, titles and subjects. (TS – On-going)
8.3) Develop a Community Information database in MARC format available for searching the public online catalog. (AS/TS – 2007)
8.4) House all CD-ROM’s behind the Circulation Desk. (CIRC – 22005)
I.) To centralize the selection of high demand, high interest titles to ensure the most efficient acquisition of materials in adequate numbers.
9.1) Improve timely acquisition of high-demand materials by tracking movie premieres, video/DVD release dates and publication of popular authors’ new works. (ALL – 2004 & On-going)
9.2) Upon implementation of the new automation system, review electronic ordering procedures for materials in all formats and investigate discount structure, and advantages/disadvantages of major wholesale library book jobbers. (TS – 2004 & On-going)
9.3) Catalog and provide hotlinks to electronic databases, websites and e-books. (AS/TS/YS – 2007)
GOAL #2: The library’s Policies reflect current trends in library services and serve the needs of patrons, in light of rapidly changing technologies.
A.) To conduct a formal review of the remainder of the library’s Policy Manual, (exclusive of Personnel Policies).
1.1) Establish a schedule for the methodical review of library policies by the By-laws and Policies Committee, with input from appropriate departmental staff. (ADM & BOARD – 2006/07)
