Consumer Health Information Center

The Consumer Health reference collection can be found in the northwest alcove of the Reference Room. There you will find basic information on conditions and diseases, guides to prescription drugs, descriptions of medical tests and procedures and directories of physicians. Basic medical textbooks and a variety of health newsletters including the Harvard Health, Heart and Mental Health newsletters and the Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins medical letters are available.

   Health Research Databases

Three EBSCOhost health databases can be accessed in the library or from your home computer using your Glenview Public Library card number as your password.

• Health Source - Consumer Edition features searchable full text for nearly 300 journals, 1,100 health-related pamphlets; 146 health reference books; 4,500 Clinical Reference Systems reports (in English and Spanish); and Stedman's Medical Dictionary.
• Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition provides more than 550 scholarly full text journals, and also features abstracts and indexing for nearly 850 journals.


• Alt HealthWatch provides full text for 180 publications in the collection, including full text for many peer-reviewed journals. Alt HealthWatch provides in-depth coverage across the full spectrum of subject areas covered by complementary and alternative medicine dating back to 1990.


• Proquest Psychology Journals with full text is designed for both undergraduate and graduate level and contains psychological, psychiatric, and related publications.

Magazines/Newsletters
The library subscribes to a number of consumer health magazines and newsletters which are available in the Reference room and on the lower level in the Magazine Room. Many of these periodicals are indexed on our computer databases. Feel free to ask a library staff member to help you locate available indexes for any library periodicals or search our E-Journal Portal.

Circulating Books
The library has a broad collection of books on various health topics which circulate for three weeks. These are found on the mezzanine level of the library. Please ask a librarian to help you locate appropriate titles.
