Collection Development Policy
Introduction:
This Collection Development Policy has been approved and adopted by the
Glenview Public Library Board of Trustees so that the Executive Librarian and
staff have principles and guidelines to assist them in their professional
selection and withdrawal of library materials for the residents of Glenview.
It serves also to inform the library public of procedures for adding materials
to and withdrawing materials from the library's collection. "Library
materials," as defined in this policy, are items that the library has
undertaken to collect, maintain, and make available to the public. These items
can be in many formats, including but not limited to books, pamphlets,
periodicals, video and audio cassettes, compact discs, microforms, computer software, slides, and
toys. The principles on which this policy are based are expressed in the
"Library Bill of Rights" which the Library Board has also adopted. The Library
Board has also endorsed the "Freedom to Read Statement" of May 1983. The
fundamental guidelines for the development of the library's collections reside
in this "General Principles" section and in the library's Long Range Plan.
