Preface
The substance of this policy is in the charts listing the various materials
in the Adult and Youth Services departments. Those charts indicate the loan
period, whether items can be renewed and/or reserved, whether there are limits
on the number of items borrowed at one time, the daily and maximum fines, and
the replacement cost. When the latter is noted as "Listed," that means that
the replacement cost of the item is listed in the library's catalog and will be printed on bills.
Library Cards
Residents of incorporated Glenview may be issued a free library card. This card is good for a period of 3 years.
To obtain a library card each adult resident (18 years and older) must present 2 pieces of identification, photo identification and proof of legal residence in the Village of Glenview. A driver's license, utility bill,
checkbook, or voter's registration card are examples. Registration can only be done at the library.
For children ages 5-17 a parent or guardian must also sign the application in the presence of a staff member.
All card holders should use their Library card to charge out material. In the event that a card holder does not have their Library card, library staff may check out materials to them upon presentation of a photo identification
card. Each patron is responsible for all items borrowed on their card.
Non-Residents
A Non-resident is defined as an individual residing in an area not taxed for public library service. A Non-Resident Card may be purchased, and the fee charged is determined by state formula. The most recent original tax bill must be presented upon
application for a card and the property owner will pay the same amount as would be paid if the property were with in the library service area. Resident cards are valid for 1 year from date of purchase. The card will be issued to family members, defined
as those living at a single address.
Non-residents must purchase their cards at the public library that is within their high school district.
Residents of unincorporated Glenview, who reside in Maine Township, must purchase their library cards from Park Ridge Public Library.
Interlibrary Loan
Interlibrary loan, also referred to as I.L.L., is a service used to obtain library materials (books, articles, and audiovisual items) from other libraries when they are not available at our library. Interlibrary Loan involves the borrowing and lending of
materials among libraries. The service is provided by Library staff on behalf of patrons, following policies and procedures agreed upon by the cooperating libraries.
Every attempt is made to obtain requested materials. Items are borrowed from libraries in the North Suburban Library System first, and then other libraries in Illinois are searched. If necessary, the search may go out of state.
Requests can be made at the Information Desk or Reference Desk. Delivery time varies depending on availability, so please plan ahead. Most items arrive in approximately ten working days, but others may take several weeks. You will be notified by telephone
when your materials arrive at the Library.
Sometimes there may be a fee required from the lending library. Patrons will be notified of the cost before the actual interlibrary loan request is completed.
Fines for interlibrary loan items are charged at the same rate as local materials.
Interlibrary loan items from all other libraries may not be renewed over the telephone or via the Internet. The renewal of these items requires that library staff contact the lending library to request an extension.
All materials that are circulated are available for interlibrary loan, with the exception of new materials, adult fiction DVD’s and videos, games.
Fines and Fees
- All material must be returned undamaged. Library users are responsible for any damage (full or partial) incurred while the material is checked out to them.
- Patrons who have accrued a total of over $5.00 in fines or bills will be restricted from borrowing additional materials.
- A processing fee of $5.00, in addition to cost, will be charged for each lost and/or damaged item.
- A fee of $1.00 will be charged to replace lost or damaged Glenview Public Library cards.
Confidentiality of Records Policy
The Glenview Public Library considers its registration and circulation records as confidential information, in accordance with the Library Records Confidentiality Act, effective January 1, 1984.
Patrons have access to their own records through the online catalog using their library card number and password. The password may be changed at any time.
